Sydney’s inner-west suburb of Balmain is known for its historic charm, leafy streets, and thriving café culture. It’s a place where past and present blend effortlessly—heritage buildings house modern espresso bars with locals lingering over long brunches in the sun.
I wanted to capture this vibrant atmosphere in my latest monotype print: a black-and-white study of a trendy Balmain café, with diners enjoying the street-side bustle.
Monotype printing is an unpredictable and dynamic medium. Unlike other forms of printmaking, it allows for only one strong impression, making each piece a unique work of art. It also means you only have one go at it. That makes the big reveal all the more exciting and nerve-wrecking! Will all my hours of work come together just as I envisioned? Or will it be a disaster? It's always a thrill when it's the former!
This original monotype is now available for purchase. Whether you’re a lover of Sydney’s café culture, an admirer of printmaking, or simply looking for a unique artwork to add to your collection, this piece brings a touch of Balmain’s charm into any space.
